Vintage explosion proof cast aluminum light is a restored and polished ship light previously employed in ships’ engine rooms, cargo decks and similar areas. This Vintage explosion proof cast aluminum light was designed to allow efficient lighting on LNG or LPG carriers and chemical container ships where explosion proof lighting is essential. Built in the 1980’s, these light fittings are extremely heavy duty weighing around 45 pounds.
They are ridiculously over engineered for the purpose we now see them being used for, but they are an industrial style that we think would work well in an industrial themed cafe or bar. Incorporating a five inch diameter Poly carbonate containment tube, they may also provide lighting for food preparation areas i.e., shatterproof. The glass containment tube has also been replaced with Poly carbonate to make UN-breakable. Be aware that with both clear internal LED strip cover and Clear Poly Carbonate there is a banding effect created by internal reflection. See gallery images.
These larger light fittings have an internal shade that we polish as raw steel. When trying to maximize output the curved shade can increase the directional output towards the floor.
These lights have been stripped of their original paint and then polished to a degree, but not to a “perfect surface”. We clean them up as best we can, but they will show signs of wear consistent with their age. The original vapour containment system and ballast for the fluorescent tubes are removed and the light fitting is then retro-fitted with high quality (CRI90), low voltage LED strip inside an aluminum profile. The LED can be dimmed via the driver.
Wiring and globes
The driver location can be concealed in the ceiling space or surface mounted. All new wiring is completed ready to be installed by your electrician. We supply chain suspension when installed as a pendant. However, you may prefer to hard mount it to a ceiling or to a wall vertically.
An eight foot length of flex cable in black braid is also supplied as standard.
For US and Canada, UL listed components are used but the light fitting itself is not UL listed.
TRIAC Dimming is compatible with most mains-connected trailing or leading edge dimmers. 1-10V dimming can be used with any 1-10V dimmer or other systems such as DALI.
Please note these light fittings are refurbished and no longer qualify as vapor or explosion proof. Therefore they are not suitable for hazardous applications.
