Small Brass Vintage Ship Oval Caged Bulkhead Light with 240V E27 solid brass lamp holder. Salvaged from 1950’s era ships and constructed in solid brass with a rough cast appearance and aged ribbed glass cover. Fit to walls or ceilings using the 4 mountings that are bolted into position. For wiring purposes please note that power is by conduit connection. Connect to external mounted conduit for an authentic look. We suggest using brass and copper water pipe fittings to match the look and feel. It is a solid brass light designed to be secured directly to the ceiling in areas where there is no height for a pendant. This is an original ship fitting that has been refitted with a solid brass ES Lamp holder.
The two screws remove to open the brass cage which includes a thick glass dome. Bulbs are replaced through this cage. These were originally stamped IP64 but repolishing has removed the mark. We would consider these lights to be IP Rated however careful attention is needed when installing. A silicone sealant should be used to seal the glass to the brass base for waterproofing. They do come with original rubber or replacement where required.
Vintage ship lighting
Ship breaking or ship demolition is a type of ship disposal involving the breaking up of ships for scrap recycling. Most ships have a lifespan of a few decades before there is so much wear that refitting and repair become uneconomical. Ship breaking allows materials from the ship, especially steel, to be recycled. Equipment on board the vessel can also be reused. This is a great way to obtain the highest quality solid brass lighting components for use in industrial style design. All lamp parts show their age in a wonderful polished patina, some have more marks than others but all are acceptable wear for age given these are from Japanese ship building made after the war.
Photographed with an Edison filament fat tube. Bulb is not included. Recommended bulbs are below.
